Case 04 Next.js 16 · Supabase Live 2025 to now

Locum Optom

My locum optometry practice, with live availability for the practices that book me.

Presenting problem
Practices looking for a locum optometrist need to see quickly which dates I can work, and get in touch without phone tag.
Assessment
Availability changes week to week, so it has to be updated in minutes without touching code. The audience is practice managers checking on a phone between patients.
Plan
Next.js 16 with Supabase. A public site with an availability calendar, and an admin where I manage the hero content, services, bookable dates and enquiries. One shared colour system across the public site and the admin.
Outcome
Live at locum-optom.co.uk. Bookable dates are kept current from the admin. Page headers render at first paint, with no wait for JavaScript.
Locum Optom homepage: 'Zaehid Hakim', expert eye care across England and Wales, with Check Availability and View Services buttons.
Desktop
Locum Optom homepage on a phone.

Case detail

A fix worth recording

The page headers used to fade in through a JavaScript animation library. The server sent the HTML with headers set to invisible until the scripts loaded, so on a slow connection, or for anything that reads the page without running scripts, the headline wasn’t there. The entrances now run in CSS, so headers are visible as soon as the stylesheet arrives.

Admin

The admin manages hero content, services, availability and enquiries. Access is checked on the server, and all admin screens use the same colour tokens as the public site.
